Hand in Darkness

Project 2

Depression is a mental health that most common people have, it effects on how you live and how you feel. Franz Kafka was born on July 3, 1883, in Austria-Hungary. Kafta cut loose from parental ties and got married and fatherhood. His father was important to him, he put a lot of sense about his father into his literature. He felt heartbroken by his father, and he put that feeling into one of his other novels called Das Urteil. This novel called The Metamorphosis express the way mental health felt in the 20th century in Europe and North America. The novel impacts on how the main character named Gregor has depression and can also be mental illness. It defines his emotional damage; his suffering was on a deeper level. His mentality got to a point where he couldn’t think straight. One day he would act normal and the other with heavy emotions. He was in at a point in his depression where he felt like he couldn’t do anything or trust anyone. He didn’t even trust his own family. No one believed in him, and he was emotionally broken. Kafta the author transformed Gregor into a cockroach, he felt like he was someone that was broken and had to accept the absurdity of how the problem is. His condition of depression made him create problems in his financial and his emotions. He tries to find escapes to his problems, but his depression gets worse and starts to not remember things. He gets overwhelmed over his responsibilities. That’s why Kafka created Gregor as a form of a human sized cockroach. His family sees him in the same condition he is in, and the same way he sees himself. His family stays true and loyal to him, but it doesn’t affect the family that Gregor is only in his room and shutting everyone out. Gregor’s sister tries her best to make him feel conformable, but she does have her moments where she can’t take any of it anymore.

The group of people who he worked with had a lot of pressure behind him. No one believed in him and decided to do impulsive movements without anyone’s consent. His mentality wasn’t on the right space to make correct decisions. The novel metamorphosis is to show people that depression is real, no matter the circumstances always treat it as a real illness. It isn’t someone’s fault because a person has depression. Gregor’s family grows and treats him like he’s useless and they think he will get over with depression soon. His family feels relieved that they don’t have to deal with a bug. They find light in the family’s world, and they lived normal again.

The absurdity is not caring about life. In the depression world it means the same thing to a person. They don’t want to be alive anymore and they don’t see the meaning of life. Kafka explained in his novel Gregor was having his rough days and didn’t think through to his decisions. The absurdity is that Gregor had to wake up and see himself turn into an insect.

Kafka investigated a deep situation turning Gregor into a roach. He wasn’t satisfied, depression can be draining without a doubt. He felt like he was a hostage and couldn’t go anywhere or he couldn’t trust no one. The sense the novel has and the humor it makes it absurd. Describing a young man who experience complete change both external and mental is unluckily. During the transformation he didn’t know anything that was going on. accept the difficulties he faces without complaining. When his father’s business collapsed, he accepted his new role as the money-maker in the family. Even if that meant he had to work as a traveling salesman which he disliked. When he realizes for the first time that he is an insect he does not try to correct it in any way. He needs time to realize that he can no longer play this role in his family and that he can’t go in its current state once more on the road. The body of the insect Gregor has an ever-greater influence on his psychology. He finds out that it is easy for him to hide in the dark under the couch in his room, like a beetle. He also finds out that he likes to crawl through walls and roofs. Seeing your reflection as a roach is blindsided, he still wanted to take care of his family even though he knew he couldn’t. he knew the change in the body was made and he can’t change it in any way. He did not regret his condition that he had, he acknowledges what he is and what he will always be. At the end Gregor find his own space in his room where he feels comfortable and calm and dies.

Depression can affect in any way and form the author can inform you how someone can see each other and how you can express. Mental health is something isolates and brings emotions down. Kafta wrote Metamorphosis to show how difficult things can get, living in a society of the struggle and need the acceptance of a person. Mentally ill or not. This novel shows resembles of Kafka and his father. There should always be someone with you whatever it is. In this novel resembles of Kafka’s diaries and a lot of ways on how he imagines his own extinction. The author can relate to depression because that’s how he felt when all of his family situations happened he knew what mental health was and it reflected his in many negative aspects.
